CCAN DIRECTOR RECOGNIZED BY HEALTH AND WELFARE PEERS
Cynthia G. Scott, Executive Director of the Garden City-based Coalition
Against Child Abuse & Neglect (CCAN), has been presented with a
prestigious award recognizing her "as the region's most significant
and resourceful leader in Long Island's service for abused children
and families at risk."
Presented by the Health and Welfare Council (HWC) of Long Island
at its annual luncheon held recently, the award was established
in 1979 in honor of a former Board member, President and long time
advocate for the poor, Sanford V. Lenz. In making the presentation,
Dr. Richard P. Dina, chair of the HWC Community Service Awards Committee,
quoted above, said: "We applaud Cindy and her staff at the Coalition
for their exceptional contributions and service to Long Island children
in need."
Ms. Scott has headed CCAN since 1997. Building on the non-profit's
27-year tradition of advocacy and education on behalf of children
and families, under Ms. Scott leadership, CCAN today also offers
direct services to the child victims of abuse and neglect, and to
their non-offending family members, through such efforts as CCAN's
Child Victim Advocate Program, Project Kidz Talk©, and Project Families
Together.
Ms. Scott said in accepting the 2006 Sandy Lenz Award, "It is
a great honor to have received this award from my peers. I find
my inspiration in the many children and families I have personally
met who have overcome some of the most horrific trauma a child or
family can experience. I dedicate this award to them."
